Electrical Testing (PAT)
You may have been told by a venue representative
“I have to see your PAT certificates” or “All equipment must have a green sticker, it’s the law”
This is incorrect. There is no legal requirement for any portable appliance to have a PAT certificate or a green sticker.
There is no mention at all, of PAT in The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
However, you do have a legal responsibility to maintain your equipment in a safe condition. It’s also common sense !
So, while PAT is not a legal requirement, it is a good idea.
I can test your backline equipment for a very reasonable £2.50 per item, minimum of four items,
and you can have free green stickers !
And while we are on the subject of electrical safety,
don’t take it for granted that the 13a socket you are about to plug into is safe.
I have found dodgy outlets in pubs, clubs, and hotels.
And it can be even worse when power is coming from a generator, like festivals or wedding marquees.
For example:
No earth ? Yup, seen that a few times.
Earth and live reversed, and faulty protection circuits on the generator ?
Oh yes – luckily my mains tester was the first thing plugged in, and the issue was obvious.
That fault had the potential to kill.
Get yourself a Martindale “Buzz It” mains tester like this, £20 from Amazon,
and make sure it is the FIRST thing you plug into ANY socket.
